Not so much the temperature (heating pads/lamps take care of that), but humidity. Jackson is so dry but ball pythons are native to Africa. They are notoriously picky eaters yet Nudes always thrived except at the start of each winter when humidity really changed. I ferociously sprayed his cage to contain humidity. He’d refuse mice for a month or so and then pick back up by mid-winter. Something happened this year and our little guy passed away. Truly I don’t know. Bears are stupidly hard to judge. They are usually alone and difficult to tell size at a distance. This being my 5th bear, however, I felt confident. I watched him for three hours a couple days prior thinking it was a large sow or mid-sized boar. I passed on him. I wanted a larger-looking bear or to at least wait until Emma was with me. Later with Emma, after an entire evening of glassing with no bears, this guy stepped out the following morning. Ian and I have surfed with many dolphins. My dad and I had a minke whale surface two feet from our kayak. And this year of blogging started with some tremendous humpback sightings in Hawaii. Fortunately in California we don’t have to drive far to see these same critters. On my final day my parents and I boarded a boat in Monterey. Brendan, Ben, Kevin, Tati, Aaron - you guys rock and I missed ya so much. We picked wild Chicken of the Woods mushrooms on course and cooked them that night. Next Brendan and I went crabbing at midnight on the opener of season. Standing in wetsuits to our waists with PBRs in hand, we threw tiny pots out into the surf until 3am. Poop in a bag and carry it off the mountain. But that’s gross. So we complicate things to reduce smell. First, always stay in your harness and tied-in during this whole event. Next, aim into a scented trash bag to add a sweet aroma of “ocean breeze”. We carried a small amount of cat litter that we would add to that bag. Shove all that into a ziplock, and then into another. Redundancy is key. Squeeze out the air (plug your nose during this part). Then take an empty two-liter water bottle and cut a slit around the middle. Shove one poop in the top of the bottle, another in the bottom, then duct tape the crap out of that bottle. My brother picked me up from the airport at 4:30pm. By 6pm we were in the ocean chasing waves. That’s pretty badass. Next, while we enjoyed ocean swells in 70 degree sun, the Sierras received several feet of snow. That’s 4 hours away. With a little planning you could ski and surf in the same day. The summits can be wildly anti-climactic. The fun comes in the ascent. The goal seems complete at the top. Yet there’s always a descent which usually is heinous, scary, and seemingly endless. Unless it involves skiing. There we go again - another shout-out to winter. Getting off El Cap requires a descent of the East Ledges - a route new to both Ian and I. It involves 5 rappels plus 3-4th class scrambling on ledges. Our problems - light was fading, the 3-4th class sections were covered in several feet of snow and slick ice, and we didn’t fully know the route. Add in 80-100 lbs of gear to carry out. We post holed through the 3rd class with soaked approach shoes. Nightfall came prior to the first rappel. We wondered if we’d have to bivy on top another night and finish in the morning. Luckily, a day prior, two strong female climbers had completed NIAD (Nose In A Day). High pressure blew over the Sierras after a 3-5ft dump of snow. It’d be mostly dry for a week. Ian could miraculously get off work. It was go time. Oh crap, wait, there’s precipitation on Friday. Why? Because bad weather is what you hope for! The high pressure weeks are the icy, cold, crappy days. The storm cycles bring the face shots and pow. So long as you monitor avalanche conditions, storms bring the best days. In summer a storm cycle can kill alpine climbing plans. It was a rushed and panicked moment yet he dropped to the ground in the snow quickly and calmly. Knowing that bull may wind us any second, he put three solid rounds straight into the sweet spot. The grouping was beautiful. The bull expired less than 10 feet from where he stood. Highs and lows again. In 10 minutes we went from thinking the hunt was over to having Tyler’s first bull elk on the ground. I’ll always remember his tears while looking at me as I told him his bull was down. Arriving where we expected to see the others, we found two new elk instead. Two bulls sparring 350 yards up the hill. As they fought I knew their senses would be lowered. They were distracted elk and that’s the perfect opportunity. The three of us crept closer. We bumped mule deer along the way but thankfully in the other direction. We found a prone shooting position at 250 yards and Sam put a beautiful single shot on one of the bulls. He dropped instantly and expired soon after. He didn’t make it 25 yards from where I hit him yet we weren’t able to see him go down. My biggest bull to date! The highs and lows of hunting are insane. One moment we feared we had injured two animals and may not recover them. 20 minutes later we were sitting over two bulls that died humanely and quickly. What a rush! My first elk double! I’ve harvested two deer at once before and I’ve harvested a deer and an elk on the same trip. But never two bulls at the same time. And with a singular rifle that you have to hand load each round. My bull wasn’t on the ground. I re-ranged the meadow and it was 340 yards. My first range must have hit a closer tree branch. “Damnit” I thought, “but still that shot should have been solid”. I got eyes on my bull moments before he crested the small ridge. He was wobbling hard but crested the ridge without falling. Two bulls hit and neither confirmed dead. Emma and I began to panic and stress. We grabbed our gear to search with the 10-15 minutes of light left. This was a serious low point. There was no sign of hers in the timber near her shot. But this was our first bull we shared. I piled on top of him after his shot and we both shed a tear or two. It was Kelly’s first hunt too. And here we were as three great friends getting to share it. It was special to say the least. This bull was deep. Deepest elk of the season. We loaded up half the bull and brought it back to camp that night. Of course there are other responsibilities like finding moose, helping clients survive, cooking, scouting, etc. but my main job comes when the moose hits the floor. This year I completed my requirements for my Alaska guides license so I’ll begin that application process this fall. I cherish the opportunity to hunt these beautiful animals each year. But I never figured I’d pull the trigger myself. And that was totally fine with me. I get more euphoria watching and helping someone else harvest an animal than taking one myself. I’ve been using this same cat food can for over 10 years. I bought it in 2012 and punched holes in it. I place an ounce of denatured alcohol in it and put my pot right on top. Sure it’s not as fast as a jet boil. Maybe 5 minutes extra to boil your water. But generally we have endless time to be patient in the outdoors. The limiting factor in this sport is not breath holds but equalization. Avoid congestion like the plague. But I wasn’t sick. My sinuses actually dried out from air conditioning. You read that right - ya I’m a fragile little b*tch. Turns out it’s very common and many freedivers refuse to sleep with A/C, and will arrive to competitions weeks ahead expecting congestion issues from it. Some even go as far as wearing masks on air planes pre-COVID era. Sebastian is right. I seek the connection and freedom of the ocean more than a depth number on my watch. In fact my most memorable dives this trip have been my most relaxed ones, not my deepest. I was prouder of a really calm 30 meter dive than I was of a 35 meter dive right after. But I’ve always been a math/science kid. My brain thinks in numbers. And depth goals do drive the sport deeper. But I am reminded they are not a measure of success. No matter how gross we couldn’t turn down free calories. Thanks to Denton’s recommendation I’d been searching for it all trip. Taste: 5/10, Texture: 2/10. The taste wasn’t bad, similar to a boiled egg. Biting through the developing duck fetus wasn’t terrible. But sections of the egg were incredibly stiff, hard, and chunky. Nature had one more surprise for us. I jokingly yelled to Tanner “I’ll buy you the biggest dinner if you find me a sea krait”. We watched multiple divers break national and continental records. The most insane was Kurt Chambers from Hawaii with a 109m (358ft) constant weight dive with a mono-fin. My first highlight came when I hit a 30.3 meter dive. When diving next to a rope it’s easy to descend straight down. Without a rope and on a reef, I naturally descend at an angle. This “hypotenuse” descent is longer and thus makes me even more proud of the 30.3m. We haven’t actually started formal freedive training yet. There was an international competition at our dive center and our instructor competed. Which was perfect. We were able to get settled, learn the area, rent our motorbikes, and become “locals”. We watched the competition each morning and followed it up with fun dives on local reefs. It allowed me to focus on my own training and dive back into the sport before the work begins. With expectations low the momentary high of spotting a bear at 6:30am was immense. It was the same bear I watched for three hours two days prior. I woke up Emma. She stayed back watching as I put the stalk on. By 7:30am we had a dead bear and by 9am we were ready to pack out. Wow things can turn fast. It was a solid reminder to stay positive on slow hunts. Why am I so pale? Sure, my Irish descent largely contributes. But also I am basically nocturnal. Not that I always prefer to be - in fact I love sleeping. But for outdoor pursuits night missions can be necessary. We climb at night in summer to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. We ski at night in spring to avoid wet-slab avalanches. We hike in the dark when hunting to be in optimal zones at dawn and dusk. Plus, honestly, it’s just more fun. Does your Mother’s day usually involve looking for rattlesnakes? My mom is so rad. During my high school years, whether before my Search and Rescue meetings or on a free weekend, she and I would hike together in Marin County. We found a particular spot with a high rattlesnake concentration. It soon became one of our favorites. For Mother’s day this year she chose to revisit this area with my dad, brother, his girlfriend, and me. Weather wasn’t optimal but to our great surprise we found a beautiful juvenile rattler. It was such a cool, special day all around. Thanks Mom! I am back to sleeping in my car - parked on National Forest land, BLM land, or the Jackson streets. This has given me time to reflect on all the adventures I’ve had with my Subaru plus reminded me how comfy and cozy I sleep in it. Would I call it comfy-wumphy or cozy-wozy? Probably both. It currently smells of sweaty climbing gear, wet antlers, Yosemite pine needles, spilled sun flower seeds, and a sheep skull. Along with the dents from hail, your hood has a dent from my butt after watching a meteor shower on it. Your exterior has three other large dents/scratches - all hit and runs from people that didn’t know how to drive in snow. Those dents made it financially stupid to trade you in for a pickup - which I debated for a long time. Sorry I ever considered that. You’re better. The interior has scuff marks from sharp climbing gear and antlers plus grease stains and tire treads from cramming bikes inside. The roof rack has blood stains from the multitude of critters it has packed out in one trip that took me four to get out of the woods. For those unfamiliar with mountain towns - they are seasonal. Your income, your activities, and even your friends. People come and they go. Many come back but not all. April is our off-season. My addiction to free diving was re-established with multiple reef dives between 15-20 meters and hangs on the sand below. I could see the rock walls surrounding me and the approaching boot pack as the slope angle increased. This is what I came for. Did I plan to ski Teewinot Friday? No. After a tiring six hour drive from Montana with my mind in a daze, heart broke, and head hurt with stress from relationships and work - did I want to ski Teewinot Friday? No. Did I force myself to? Yes. I take off my skins and punch in my steps the next 2000ft. I reach the summit 4.5 hours after leaving the car. But I don’t drop in. In front of me lies an untouched canvas of white. With recent high pressure systems I expect hard packed, icy snow. Instead nature sees my struggle and blesses me with a surprising powder pocket 4000 ft in length. It is magical. I carve my way down smiling ear to ear while leaving a sinusoidal wave of turns. That’s all I took from the mountains that day - a slight disruption to its blanketed, white face. But the mountains gave me so much more. I skin back to my car with a clear mind, healthy heart, and reminder of what makes me happy. My problems don’t fade. Things still really hurt. But I understand my issues better. It’s a backcountry staple for us. Since it first received enough snow in mid-December, I have booted Glory 19 times. Do I sound like a broken record? Probably. But that record has 5-10 different tracks (ski lines) on it. Each track will serenade you with 1500-3000 vertical feet of powder turns, sunrises and sunsets that will leave you speechless, and a community of friends you’ll make every time you see them up there.
